Chapter Thirteen

MELANY

After we left Zeus’s hall, Lucian suggested we go flying together like we used to before all the shit happened, before the trials, before Hades. We went outside toward the maze to unfurl our wings. I pushed mine out, a tension in my back releasing, and spread them out around me. Shivers rushed over my body at the anticipation of taking flight. I smiled at Lucian then took off into the sky.

I’d forgotten how it felt to soar through the open air. For the past few months, all my flying had been done in the training room in Hades’s Hall. This was freeing in more ways than one. Laughing, I did a corkscrew up, then dove back down toward the ground, swooping up at the last moment. That move always made my belly flip over.

Lucian flew in beside me, and we swooped toward the woods and lake. Together, we soared over the treetops. I lowered my hand and brushed my fingers against the highest branch of leaves. Then we glided over the lake. I stared at our reflection in the water, watching as my black wings flapped, the tips touching the water, and Lucian’s beautiful red ones doing the same. We made quite the impressive pair.

After flying over the lake a bunch of times, we jetted back to our favorite spot—the top of the tallest tower of the academy. Once I landed, I folded in my wings and walked to the edge to look out over the grounds. I could see the training field, the maze, and the cobblestone path to the academy that I remembered walking when I first arrived. I couldn’t believe how much had changed since then.

Lucian came up to my side. “The view from up here will always be awesome.”

I nodded. “Yeah. I’ve missed it.”

“I’ve missed you.” He grabbed my hand.

“I’ve missed you, too.”

“Have you?”

I turned to him. I knew what he was really asking me. Hearing about Hades this morning must’ve been hurtful. I wanted to tell him that being with Hades hadn’t meant anything, that I didn’t have feelings for him, but that would be a lie. I had very real, very strong emotions for the God of darkness, just as I had feelings for Lucian.

I reached up and traced my hand over his brow, down his cheek to his lips. He kissed the tips of my fingers. I stepped into him, wrapping my other hand around his waist. Slowly, he dipped his head down and pressed his lips to mine.

My heart leapt into my throat as he cupped me around the neck and deepened the kiss. Holding me tight, he walked me back into the stone turret wall. His face nuzzled my neck, then he brushed his lips over my chin, then up to my mouth again. He swept his tongue over mine.

A little moan escaped my throat. I couldn’t stop it. I was too swept up in what he was doing to me with his kiss. My body was on fire for him.
